Rebabbitting Worn Bearings

The important issues to consider when debating whether to purchase a new one or repair the existing one, are cost, quality and delivery time. In most cases repairing the parts is the most cost effective way to deal with worn bearings. D.H. Associates can repair bearings at the same or higher quality than by other manufacturers. Repairing worn out bearings can reduce the cost of buying new parts by 50% - 100% and with a much quicker lead time. Bearings that are non repairable can also be manufactured new at a lower cost than the OEM (see manufacturing new bearings).

Processes of Repairing Worn Babbitt Lined Bearings

  • Initial Inspection: All worn bearings are inspected for cracks and excessive shell wear. If there are any problems, the customer is contacted and informed of their options. After the bearings have been inspected, the customer is then apprised of the price and the delivery time (if bearing has not yet been quoted). After approval, any cracks are repaired and a detailed print is drawn up to show sizes, hole locations, oil grooving, etc.
  • Casting Babbitt: Most bearings are prepared and centrifugally cast to ensure maximum density, freedom from impurities and porosity, and an excellent bond of babbitt to bearings shell. The two most common babbitt materials that bearings are cast in are IS 25 Gr-84 babbittmental (high tin). If specifications require a different grade we can readily supply it. For odd shaped or over sized bearings we also have the capability to undertake static cast of almost any bearings. No matter which casting method is used, the preparation of the shell is the same, so you will always get a well-bonded bearing.
  • Ultrasonic Testing: An ultrasonic test is performed to ensure the bond of babbitt to shell. Our quality control personnel use up to date equipment to verify low quality babbitt. All test results are recorded and a copy of the inspection report is shipped with bearings.
  • Machining: Final machining is done on a variety of shop equipment depending on style, size and shape of the bearing. Our machinery consists of manual lathes and mills, horizontal boring mills, vertical boring mills and general milling machinery. Great care is taken to make sure that all sizes stay within precise tolerances
  • Final Inspections: After bearings are completed, they undergo inspection. The bore size, O.D. Seating area size and thrust lengths are recorded. Bearings are also checked to make sure that thrust faces are perpendicular to the bore and O.D. and bore are concentric to one another. All recorded sizes and the ultrasonic test results are sent with the bearings.
  • Shipping: The bearing is debured to remove any sharp edges a rust inhibitor is applied to the bearing to prevent corrosion. Next the bearings is then securely boxed, skidded or crated for shipping.

Manufacturing New Bearings

Most bearings can be repaired in 24 - 48 hours. However, the size and complexity of the order will determine just how fast we can complete the order.

Metabolizing (Repairing Bearing Outside Diameters)

The outside diameter of most bearing shells is just as crucial as the bore size of the bearing. If the O.D. of the bearing is not seated properly to the bearing housing this could set off a chain reaction of problems that could eventually cause a breakdown. A few of the common problems are vibration and bad dissipation of heat. Both of these problems are a result of the bearings shell O.D. being too small. The fit should be between .05 mm - 0.1 mm clearance between housing and bearing shell and even tighter in some cases. There are a few other reasons for bearing shell to be reworked:

  • Bearing shell has been distorted and O.D. is out of round
  • Bearing housing has been damaged and needs to be machined oversize
  • Bearing O.D. is just too small.
